Quilting in the Genesee Valley!

20171012_115928
Yowza, what a crowd!

Things were hustling and bustling by the bus load at the October meeting of the Genesee Valley Quilt Club, founded in Rochester, NY in January 1936!

Can anyone name me a quilter’s organization that has been around longer than this one and is still thriving?

I’m so honored to be here with these folks –and the bus load of 50+ visitors that joined us yesterday for lunch and an afternoon of fun quilt talk from the Finger Lakes region.

The quilt club has a a wonderful way to “Make a day of it!”

The business meeting starts at 10am or so, followed by show and share, and then they break for LUNCH!  After lunch it was my turn to get up and share my love of scrap quilts.

You know that blouse you thought looked great on the hanger and was really flowy and pretty with just a bit of sparkle?  And then someone takes your photo and you realize you look like a sack of potatoes?  Oh well! LOL!

After all was packed up, quilts folded and tucked into my bags – I found myself with a free afternoon AND an escort!!  Click to view:

Autumn in New York!

We did a bit of shopping at Parkleigh, a great gift and candy shop in a historic section of town.  I have never laughed so hard in my life at the SOCKS that were in this one section,  I picked up 4 pairs, but this is my favorite:

Some days are like this! LOL!

Perfect quilters socks.

Did you know that there is a beautiful waterfall right in downtown Rochester?  It couldn’t have been more perfect –a train blew its whistle and went rumbling across the trestle above the falls as we were watching.  I quickly put the camera on video mode.  Take a look by clicking to view:

And did you see the birds?

Reflections on water.

The weather has been unseasonably warm, and we experienced a bit of luck as the clouds that you see in the downtown waterfall photos broke away and left us with some beautiful sunshine!  Destination?  Lake Ontario!

Every time I am near the great lakes, the words from the song “the Edmund Fitzgerald” ring through my hears “And further on Lake Ontario takes in what Lake Erie can send her…..”

45 miles across to Canada in the distance.  All of this is fresh water – not salt water!  Amazing!

Little lake light in the distance – blue sky above!

We walked out along the jetty to the little light house and back before heading to dinner for three.  As we were walking this crazy dude in a wet suit come screaming by on a jet ski!  In the middle of OCTOBER!  Yes, the sun is out.  We didn’t need jackets – temps were about 70 degrees, but that water is chilly.  October!  Perhaps it was his last hurrah of the season, but we just shook our heads and said we’d both rather be quilting!

A full tummy a couple of hours later and I was tucked into my room with just enough energy to stitch a few more blocks on a borrowed featherweight.

Today – Pineapple Blossom from the free patterns tab is up on the agenda and I’m looking forward to it!  In the lobby at breakfast folks were still talking about the record high temps and what that will mean for this coming winter.  Some think it means that winter will hit with the vengeance with record snow fall.  Others are not so sure.

  7. Ha ha~ I was just admiring how stylish you look in the new blouse, and then I read that you don't like the way it looks in the picture! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, they say, and I think you look great. Of course, you could wear an actual potato sack and look lovely, because of the goodness you choose to let shine. You are loved!

  12. So now have listened to Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and remember having heard it before. It's the kind of song that I wouldn't have remembered who sang it. My first guess would have been Johnny Horton with his unique-sounding ballads. But Gordon Lightfoot made perfect sense to me too. Thanks for that little bit of nostalgia!

  13. We visited the Great Lakes from California last year and my husband the T-shirt collector bought one of my favorites: "The Great Lakes: No sharks, No salt, No worries" LOL!

  15. I so enjoy the videos of your travels! The Great Lakes - such a beautiful and magnificent sight to see; I doubt I will ever see them in person, so your videos were very much appreciated! The socks are a blast! I would have bought some too! LOL, I got such a kick out of your comment about your top, as that's what I think sometimes when I see a picture of myself in what I thought was a very attractive outfit, but I'm sure you looked just beautiful in yours! I hope we get to see some of the Pineapple Blossom blocks the ladies made; that is such a beautiful quilt!
